Electric Flour Tortilla Maker
Making fresh flour tortillas at home is a snap with your new Electric Flour Tortilla Maker! The tedious task of rolling out consistent tortillas. The Electric Flour Tortilla Maker uses the same principle used by commercial tortilla machines that manufacturers and restaurants use. Heated polished metal plates press and par bake the flour tortillas or flatbread which are then cooked on a hot griddle (as you would hand rolled tortillas). This method produces a superior quality tortilla compared to those made in "press and bake" tortilla makers typically sold to home cooks.
Getting Started With The Electric Flour Tortilla Maker
Remove the Electric Flour Tortilla Maker from its box and clean the polished press plates with a soft cloth or paper towel. Carefully wipe off the exterior of the tortilla press and the handle but do not get the unit wet. *The tortilla maker must never be submerged in water or become wet, this may lead to shorting out of the heating element or reduce the life of the product.
The tortilla maker is fully assembled and ready to be used. Please save the enclosed instruction leaflet and warranty card for future reference.
Using the Electric Flour Tortilla Maker
Before using the tortilla maker, apply a very small amount of vegetable oil to a paper towel and wipe the polished press plates. This will clean off any dust or grime without using water and provide lubrication for easier clean-up. Do not over apply oil. Plug the tortilla maker in and allow it to preheat closed for 10 -12 minutes. It is now ready to use.
Prepare your flour dough using a favorite flour tortilla recipe. Roll well kneaded flour dough "golf ball" size and slightly flatten it with your hand. Place the dough in the center of the tortilla maker plates and close. Apply firm pressure with the insulated handle and hold for 3-4 seconds. You can usually feel back pressure from steam inside the tortilla as it begins to cook. Release pressure and open the press using the small knob on the top platen. The tortilla can be carefully removed by hand and should not stick. (To obtain a thinner tortilla press and hold for 2 seconds, turn tortilla half way and press again for 2 more seconds).
The flour tortilla is now ready to cook on a hot griddle as usual, it is not fully cooked. The par baked tortillas may be placed in the refrigerator for later cooking by sealing inside a plastic bag. They will not stick together when refrigerated. They will stick together if frozen. If you want to freeze them, it is recommended you either finish cooking them first or separate the tortillas with wax paper.
Care of Electric Flour Tortilla Maker
The polished aluminum press plates require very little clean-up. Simply wiping them off with a dry paper towel or soft cloth is adequate. Do not wash the press or the polished plates with water. If necessary use a slightly damp cloth to carefully wipe off any dried dough or dirt from the exterior or handle. It is suggested that before storing the electric flour tortilla maker a soft cloth or paper towel with a small amount of oil applied to it be inserted between the polished plates. Store in a dry location.
Tips For Making Delicious Flour Tortillas
- You can control the thickness of the flour tortillas by varying the amount of pressure you apply.
- Experiment with the size of the dough balls used. If dough squeezes out the edges of the press when pressure is applied reduce the size.
- The tortilla maker becomes hot but not as hot as a cooker or waffle iron, the heated press plates are designed only to apply heat to form and par bake the flour tortillas. Do not attempt to fully cook the tortillas.
- A mixture of half whole wheat and half white flour works very well. all whole wheat can be used but the tortillas may not be as flexible and tender. Experiment with adding seasonings or flavoring to the dough and see what works best. See our authentic flour tortilla recipes.
